Not All Shilajit Is Created Equal

Shilajit is not manufactured. It is found. That single fact explains almost everything about why quality varies so wildly from one jar to the next — and why two products with identical labels can be completely different substances.
If you are about to buy shilajit for the first time, or you have been taking something for months and have started to wonder what is actually in it, this is the post worth reading first.
What shilajit actually is
High in the mountains, plant matter gets trapped in rock. Under pressure, across a timescale measured in millions of years rather than seasons, it becomes a dense, mineral-rich material that seeps out of cracks in the cliffs when the temperature rises.
Nobody makes it. Nobody farms it. It is collected from the rock face, and then it either gets purified properly or it does not.
That is the whole reason quality varies so much. With most supplements the raw ingredient is standardised and the manufacturer is the variable. With shilajit, the mountain is the variable — and mountains are not interchangeable.
The counterfeiting problem is real, and it is documented
Shilajit is expensive, slow to collect, and almost impossible for a customer to identify by eye. That combination attracts exactly the behaviour you would expect.
Published analyses of products sold as shilajit have repeatedly found samples that were adulterated, diluted, or not shilajit at all — material bulked out with cheaper substances, or mixtures assembled to resemble the real thing. Researchers looking at commercial supplies have flagged inconsistent composition between products carrying near-identical marketing.
You cannot tell by looking
Colour, smell and texture can all be imitated. The tar-like appearance people use as a quality signal is one of the easiest properties to fake — and none of the popular kitchen tests detect heavy metals, which is the risk that actually matters.
Heavy metals: the risk nobody wants to talk about
Here is the thing about a substance that forms inside rock. It absorbs what surrounds it.
Shilajit picks up the mineral content of its mountain — which is the entire point, and also the entire risk. A source in a clean, geologically stable, unindustrialised region yields material with a mineral profile you want. A source downstream of mining, industry or agricultural runoff yields material carrying whatever was in that water and soil.
This is not hypothetical. Testing of shilajit products on the open market has found elevated levels of heavy metals including lead and arsenic in some samples. The material is doing exactly what it does — concentrating what its environment contains.
Sourcing and safety are not two questions. They are the same question.
A seller who cannot tell you precisely where their shilajit comes from cannot tell you what it absorbed.
Why the source decides everything
Our shilajit comes from the Altai — the range running through the corner where Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China meet.
It is one of the least industrialised places left on the map. Almost no farmland. Almost no industry. No mining runoff and no agricultural chemicals draining into the rock the shilajit forms in.
And a large part of it is protected by international agreement. The Golden Mountains of Altai have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 — roughly 1.6 million hectares, with the strictest zones closed to development entirely. The region has stayed clean for a fairly unglamorous reason: almost nobody is permitted to change it.
That is not a marketing detail. It is the mechanism. Protected, unindustrialised ground is why the finished material tests the way it does.
What is actually in it
The active fraction of shilajit is fulvic acid, alongside humic acid formed by the same process. Here is what our certificate of analysis reports:
Worth knowing when you compare products: sellers quote these two figures interchangeably, and they are not the same thing. A product advertising a high number may be quoting total bioactives while another quotes fulvic acid alone. Ask which one you are looking at.
Four questions worth asking any seller
Whether you buy from us or not, these four separate the sellers who know their supply chain from the ones who bought a pallet.
- Where exactly does it come from? Not “the Himalayas” or “Central Asia” — which range, and is it single-source or blended? A blended product has as many risk profiles as it has origins.
- Can I see a certificate of analysis? A current one, for heavy metals, from an independent laboratory. “Lab tested” on a label is a marketing phrase. A COA is a document with numbers on it.
- What are the actual numbers? Not “passes safety standards” — the measured values, and the limit they are measured against. A seller who is proud of their results will quote them.
- What else is in it? Particularly for capsules and tablets, which need binders to hold together. Ask what they are.
Any seller who gets vague on question two or three has answered the question.

Questions people ask before buying
Can you tell real shilajit by the burn test or the water test?
Not reliably. The popular home tests — dissolving it in warm water, holding a flame to it, checking whether it goes brittle in the freezer — will catch the crudest fakes and nothing else. They test physical behaviour, and physical behaviour is straightforward to imitate. None of them detect heavy metals. A laboratory report does what a kitchen test cannot.
Is darker shilajit stronger?
No. Colour tells you very little, and it is one of the easiest properties to manipulate. Depth of colour has been used as a quality signal for long enough that it is now specifically targeted by people making imitations.
Does purification remove the good parts?
Done properly, no — purification removes rock fragments, plant debris and soil that came off the cliff with it. Raw shilajit straight from the mountain is not a finished product and was never meant to be consumed unprocessed. The question worth asking is not whether it was purified, but whether it was tested afterwards.
Is more expensive shilajit better?
Price is a weak signal in both directions. Genuinely well-sourced, properly tested shilajit costs more to produce, so the cheapest options on a marketplace deserve suspicion. But a high price proves nothing on its own. The certificate of analysis is the signal. The price is not.
